Cheapest Load of Rubbish - Recyle

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. When trying to reduce your environmental impact the primary focus should be on reducing the amount of waste generated, followed by reusing anything you possibly can, and finally recycling whatever is left. Recycling rather than discarding prevents thousands of tons of rubbish entering landfill sites every year and saves even more chemical by-products entering the atmosphere when waste is incinerated.

Recycling and reusing are always the best options, however, it’s also important to know which items can’t be recycled. Mixing non-recyclables with recycling can actually cause more damage as it may result in the entire load becoming contaminated and discarded. So which items and materials can and can’t be recycled?

Things That Can Be Recycled and Reused?

One of the most obviously recyclable products, paper is easy to recycle and widely accepted. All types of paper can be recycled as long as it hasn’t been treated (e.g. laminated or waxed) or soiled. Recycling paper not only prevents wastage but also prevents further deforestation.

Cardboard accounts for a staggering amount of waste generated each year. Used as packaging in both the home and corporate world, cardboard is everywhere, and it can be recycled or reused with ease.
Plastics are possibly the worst offender when it comes to environmental impact. They don’t biodegrade and will pollute the environment when left in landfills or incinerated. Not all plastics are recyclable but the common types used in packaging such as PET (polyethylene terephthalate) or HDPE (High-density polyethylene) can be recycled in most locations.

Aluminium, steel, tin, and copper are all great candidates for recycling. They can be recycled with very little or no material loss and reused endlessly. Whether from packaging material in drinks or food products, or vehicle parts and other industrial products, metal should always be recycled.

Similar to most metals, glass can be recycled and is accepted almost everywhere. It will sometimes be required to separate glass into different colours, but many locations can now sort them at the recycling plant.

Electronics such as computers, phones, or tablets contain many chemicals and materials that are devastating to the environment. Luckily, they are widely accepted for deconstruction where the dangerous components can be either recycled or disposed of safely.

What Items Can’t Be Recycled?

Often used in food containers, take-away drinks cups, and as packing material, styrofoam is a type of polystyrene. Styrofoam can’t be recycled in any way and nor does it biodegrade. Try to restrict the usage of styrofoam as much as possible — it is also a good candidate for reuse when avoidance is impossible.
While paper itself is easily recyclable, a number of factors may prevent it from doing so. Any paper that has become contaminated (e.g. used tissue or paper towels) can’t be recycled due to the risk of contamination — it is possible to compost it in some cases, though. Likewise, paper that has been coated in various ways such as with plastic laminate or wax coatings can’t be recycled.
Glass or ceramics that have been designed for speciality purposes or have been treated or coated usually can’t be recycled. Pyrex items used for cooking, mirrors, and light bulbs are all glass products that should be kept out the recycling.

Not all types of plastic can be recycled. Plastic bags require highly specialised equipment and processing techniques that often isn’t available due to cost, for example. Other types of plastics such as those used for hard-plastic bottle caps (polypropylene) are unable to be recycled at all.

Biological materials can’t be recycled and will contaminate any recycling that are included with; this applies to both biological materials or items contaminated with them. Biological materials can include dead animals, medical waste, or soiled nappies.

Generally, anything from your garden can’t be recycled but often can be turned into compost. Garden cuttings, weeds, removed plants, or soil shouldn’t go into the recycling bin.

Often you will be able to recycle or reuse waste materials at home. However, if your local area doesn’t offer services, or you have a particularly large amount of materials you may require dedicated waste removal and disposal.
