Big Bulky Rubbish Removal

Do you believe that Australians have been recycling since 1815!

According to recyclingnearyou.com.au, in this year, “The first Australian paper mill to use recycled material was built. It used recycled rags to make paper”.

Through education, Aussie’s are now aware of the importance of reuse and recycling. We no longer throw everything into our regular bin but instead embrace the 3 bin system, separating items such as paper, plastic and metals.

This action has now become second nature, but if we stumble across something a little more out of the ordinary, what do we do then?

Cheapest Load of Rubbish receives many requests to remove unusual items, but what most people don’t know is that these items, in most cases, are highly recyclable.

Boat and car parts, cool room panels, work benches, mattresses, bikes and large appliances may be bulky and cumbersome, but all of these items or their parts can be recycled or reused.

With over 25 years experience in the waste management industry, there isn’t much that we haven’t seen or collected.

We’ve collected:

  • Industrial Safes
  • Boats
  • Motors
  • Tyres
  • Air Conditioning Units
  • Concrete Laundry Tubs
  • Sheds
  • Pianos

How To Deal With Your Big Bulky Rubbish…

Trash It The Right Way

If your big and bulky items have lived their last life, then why not trash them the right way.

  1. Pull the item apart and seperate any recyclable items. Not only with this stop excessive tipping to landfill, but it will help to reduce your rubbish removal fees too.
  2. If you’re removing an item to make way for a newer model, make sure you ask the retailer about their recycling options. Quite often white goods can be taken away at the same time your new item is delivered.

Need Extra Help?

You can always rely on Cheapest Load of Rubbish to get you out of a sticky situation.

We offer free onsite quotes so there are never any hidden surprises. We’ll even remove your rubbish items from any part of your property. With 2 men per truck, you can rest up while our guys do all the hard work for you!

Inside Out

Declutter

Through the year our world gets hectic. Living takes priority and our cleaning routine is a little more lax. Bit by bit a small pile of to-do’s quickly turns into a mountain of must-do’s.

Tackle your clutter and kick it to the curb!

  1. Start by visiting each room and make a list of what’s to go
  2. Delegate tasks for each of your family members; it’s their mess too!
  3. Label 2 boxes; one for rubbish and the other for recyclables
  4. Book your junk pick-up by calling 9550 1181

The Kitchen

We all know that sometimes the corners of our cupboards get forgotten, but the time has come to take everything out, throw away out-of-date food, wash down the shelves and reorganise your storage space. This goes for your fridge too.

Guest Prep

If you’re planning on having overnight guests make sure their accommodation is warm and inviting.

  • Declutter their space by boxing up dust collectors
  • Clear adequate wardrobe and drawer space for them to use
  • Wash bedding and put clean sheets on their bed
  • Scrub the bathroom, leave out fresh towels, and if you’re feeling creative provide a basket of toiletries

Outside In

Fire Safety Check

While spending time by the pool or sun baking at the beach is an Aussie summer pastime, our heatwaves are notorious for sparking uncontrollable fires.

We must always remember, it’s never too late to protect you and your property. [1]

  • Clean out gutters and other roof fittings – they collect leaves and debris, which are extremely flammable.
  • If you have a woodpile, which is a fuel source, site it well away from the house.
  • Prune any trees that are close to the house, as overhanging branches will fuel a fire.
  • At ground level, keep grass short and rake up leaves.
  • Purchase at least one garden hose that reaches the perimeter of your property.
  • Regularly recycle newspapers and cardboard. Don’t store piles of recycling material close to the house.
  • Store flammable liquids and paint away from the house.
  • LPG gas bottles should have the valve facing away from the house.
  • Pool chemicals can ignite if placed near other flammable liquids so store them separately from other potentially dangerous chemicals.

Maintenance

By maintaining outdoor facilities like decks, paving and fencing, we lower the risk of accidents and injury. This will also increase the use of our outdoors and add to our summer time lifestyle enjoyment.

If you’re planning on replacing your fence or building a new deck, don’t forget Cheapest Load of Rubbish can help with the demolition work. Call our office on 9550 1181 to find out more!

The Real Need For Plastic Recycling

Plastics were first invented in 1860, but have only been widely used in the last 30 years. They are light, durable, mouldable, hygienic and economic, making them suitable for a wide variety of applications including food and product packaging, car manufacturing, agriculture and housing products.

With plastic bags the most widely used form of plastics, it is estimated world wide that 1 trillion bags are used and discarded every year.

Australians use 3.92 billion plastic bags a year, that’s over 10 million new bags being used every day.

Unless they are collected, they remain in the environment and accumulate at a staggering rate.

If 50 million plastic bags were made into a single plastic sheet, it would be big enough to cover the Melbourne CBD.

Plastics are identified by the types of resin used and are labelled 1 through to 7.

  1. PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) – soft drink and fruit juice bottles
  2. HDPE (High-density polyethylene) – milk bottles or shampoo containers
  3. PVC (Polyvinyl chloride or plasticised polyvinyl chloride) – cordial, juice or squeeze bottles
  4. LDPE (Low density polyethylene) – garbage bags and bins
  5. PP (Polypropylene) – ice cream containers, take-away food containers and lunch boxes
  6. PS (Polystyrene) – yoghurt containers, plastic cutlery, foam hot drink cups
  7. Other – all other plastics, including acrylic and nylon

Can We Recycle Plastic?

The good news is, yes we can recycle plastic.

Through council recycling schemes, we’re able to collect and recycle plastics labelled 1 (PET) ,2 (HDPE) and 3 (PVC or V). To prepare these plastics for recycling, rinse residue from bottles and containers (using dishwashing water), remove labels and lids and squash bottles.[1]

For all other plastic types, call Cheapest Load of Rubbish on 9550 1181. We recycle all items where possible.

You can help us by separating your waste into like piles. That way we can avoid adding to landfill because all rubbish is then taken to the appropriate transfer station or recycling plant.

How Can You Help The Environment?

To reduce the amount of plastic being used in our society, we first need to change our every day habits.

You can;-

  • Take your own bags to collect your shopping
  • Use containers to store food instead of covering with plastic wrap
  • Stop buying bottled water, use a refillable bottle instead
  • Choose paper or cardboard wrapping over plastic wrapping
  • Take your own travel mug with you for tea and coffee on the run
  • Use biodegradable facial washes and scrubs
  • Reuse ice cream and yogurt containers for kids art and craft sessions
  • Buy in bulk – Larger containers means less waste

By following these steps, not only will you help slow landfill levels, but you will also be stopping environmental contamination.

Cheapest Load of Rubbish Accepts All Plastics

If using plastic can’t be avoided, never fear, Cheapest Load of Rubbish accepts all plastics.

We take;-

Cheapest Load of Rubbish has been servicing Sydney for over 25 years. In that time we’ve grown from one truck to a modest fleet, and with our expansion comes the ability to service many of Sydney’s suburbs.

Our customers are from near and far.

The Eastern Suburbs are a common destination for our trucks who can be seen scooting around beachside suburbs such as Bondi, Bronte and Coogee, not forgetting the harbour-side mansions along New South Head Road, from Point Piper all the way to Watsons Bay. Many a renovation has been cleaned up by our guys from here.

Of course, there’s a part of Sydney Cheapest Load of Rubbish loves to travel to and that’s the North Shore. Why you you may ask? Well when our team heads north, they get to drive over the Sydney Harbour Bridge. From here it’s spectacular harbour and city views, the Opera House and bustling Circular Quay.

The Path To Recycling Glass Is Clear

We live in a world where almost anything can be recycled. Glass, one of Australia’s most common materials, has become a main staple of the recycling industry.

It is one man-made product that can be re-made time and again, without losing any of its properties and without polluting the environment.

In fact, the same glass can be recycled a million times over to produce bottles and jars of the same high quality every time. [1]

But architectural glass used for windows, doors, transparent walls and windshields, has a different composition to household glass so can’t be recycled in the same manner.

What’s the difference between household glass and architectural glass?

Bottle glass has a different chemical composition and melting temperature than window glass, meaning the two products can’t be recycled together.

Manufacturers creating new bottles have invested in the equipment needed to crush bottles and remelt them. This infrastructure is vital to make recycling work. In addition, bottles are a fairly uniform and easy-to-identify product.

Window glass is a trickier proposition. Most windows come attached to metal or wooden frames and have to be disassembled, which is labor intensive and expensive. Picking out the different types of window glass poses a bit more of a challenge. Is the glass tinted or not? Is it safety glass or tempered glass? All these different subsets of window glass also cannot be combined to create a new product. As a result, the industry has said “no” to recycling old windows.

However, not all hope is lost. Creative industry professionals are finding other uses for old windows. The glass can be melted and remanufactured into Fibreglass. Ground glass can be incorporated into glassphalt, a glass and asphalt blend, or stirred into the reflective yellow and white paint used on roads. Broken glass is combined with concrete to create terrazzo flooring and countertops.

Sheet glass can also be crushed and tumbled for Agriculture and landscape applications, such as top dressing, root zone material or golf bunker sand.

How does recycling glass save energy?

When glass is crushed in the recycling process it becomes a product called cullet.

Making new glass from recycled cullet saves energy because recycled glass melts at a lower temperature than virgin raw materials. Because the materials do not need to be heated as much, less energy is required in the manufacturing process.
Recycling glass also reduces the need for mining of raw materials. Not only does this help in conserving our natural resources, but it also lowers environmental pollution minimising the use of heavy machinery and diesel fuels.

Did you Know?

  • The energy saved from recycling just one glass bottle is enough to power a computer for 25 minutes. [4]
  • Fulgurites and obsidian are both naturally occurring glass. Fulgurites are formed when lightening strikes sand, and obsidian is created when felsic lava is cooled at a rapid rate.

We can all recycle glass…

If you use glass on a small scale, make sure you place it in your council recycle bin bare of contaminants such as food, plastic lids, cork or metals.

For larger hauls of glass products such as bottles from parties, used windows and doors from your latest renovation or architectural glass removed from shopfronts and internal walls, call the team at Cheapest Load of Rubbish.

We recycle all waste where possible by separating every load of rubbish into like materials. Each load is then transported to the appropriate transfer station or recycling plant ready for processing and reuse.

For more information about how we can help you recycle, why not give us a call on 9550 1181!
We’re only too happy to help.

Tame The Flames With Cheapest Load of Rubbish

Suburban living rarely evokes images of bushfires, but the truth is that every summer many Sydney-siders live with this very threat.

Our national parks and reserves weave through municipalities, creating wonderful green spaces for us all to enjoy, but come the warmer months these areas become volatile and leave adjacent residents at risk of grass and bushfires.

While these homes are most vulnerable, embers can travel kilometres away from the original fire, leaving neighbouring suburbs exposed too.

With this in mind, it’s important for ALL Sydney-siders to remain vigilant about fire safety and prevention.

HOW BUSHFIRES BEHAVE

It is important you understand how bushfires behave to help you protect your family and home against them. All fires need fuel, air and heat.

Fuel

Vegetation around your home like dry grass, leaves, twigs and bark provide fuel for a fire. This fuel plays a part in how hot a fire can be and how fast it can spread. If fuel is removed, the fire will starve.

Heat

Bushfires generate unbelievable heat. Much of this heat goes up into the air but significant heat also radiates at ground level. This radiant heat spreads the fire by drying out vegetation so it will burn

Embers

Even if the fire front does not reach your home it can still be damaged by burning embers carried by strong winds. Embers can get into your home through gaps in roofs, walls, evaporative air conditioners, windows and doors. They can land on materials that easily burn and this can start a fire. Research has shown that ember attack is the main reason that houses catch fire during a bushfire. Embers can continue to threaten your home even after the fire front has passed. [1]

PREPARATION AND PREVENTION

There are a number of ways you can prepare for fire season and prevent your home from falling victim to fire.

Prevention

  1. Landscape to reduce fire risk – use gravel and paving nearer to your house and ensure shrubs and tree canopies are at least a couple of metres from home.
  2. Use non-combustible materials for deckings and carports.
  3. Install fine steel wire mesh screens on all windows, doors, vents and weep holes. [2]
  4. Fit metal NOT plastic fly screens on windows and doors. [2]
  5. Enclose open areas under your decks and floors. [2]
  6. Seal all gaps in external roof and wall cladding. [2]

If you’re going on a holiday make sure you switch off any non-essential appliances. Appliances can cause internal fires too!

Preparation

  1. Keep your front and back yards free from combustible materials
  2. Keep your backyard tidy, free from any build up of flammable material.
  3. Clean leaves from gutters, roofs and downpipes regularly, and fit quality metal leaf guards.
  4. Mow your grass regularly, both in the front and back yards.
  5. Remove excess ground fuels and other combustible material.
  6. Relocate any flammable items away from your home including woodpiles, paper, boxes, crates, hanging baskets and garden furniture.

Recycled Houses – Plastic Lives Again

At Cheapest Load of Rubbish, we’re always looking at new ways to recycle and reuse unwanted goods.

We’ve rehouse thousands of items including household furniture, old building materials, even plants. But we’re most pleased by placing good quality disability equipment with people that are most in need.

That’s why we’re so happy to have found someone else in the world who through innovative recycling, is building “low-cost, safe and durable housing” [1] for the homeless.

Unilever believes in sustainable living, and each year hosts The Unilever Sustainable Living Young Entrepreneur Awards.

This year, Oscar Andres Mendez Gerardino of Conceptos Plasticos (one of the 7 winning entrepreneurs) has transformed waste plastic into usable construction materials. This process not only stops plastic from being sent to landfill, but has given the homeless of Columbia a chance to live in safe housing.

“It takes five days for four people to assemble a house of 40 square metres. Conceptos Plasticos have built nearly 1,500 square metres of houses and shelters in several regions across Colombia and are currently obtaining permits for construction of 500 square metres more in the city of Cartagena. They have used over 300 tonnes of post-industrial and post-consumer plastics in the process. In 2016, Conceptos Plasticos want to build 240 new homes, benefiting 1,200 people. By 2018 they plan to build 600 a year, positively impacting 3,000 people.”[1]

What an amazing idea from an amazing person. Well done Oscar. Your work is LIFE CHANGING!

Upcycle – It’s In The Bag!

AT HOME

When we go to the local store and make a purchase we don’t think twice about accepting our goods in a plastic bag. More to the point we don’t think at all about where these bags end up.

Their use is brief but their lifespan endures for up to 1000 years! If plastic bags are to remain as part of our daily ritual, then more effort needs to be made to reuse, recycle and up-cycle.

Yes many supermarkets through the REDcycle Program, have drop off points for unwanted shopping bags but Did You Know that other types of plastic bags are also accepted? Soft plastics of all descriptions can be placed the the collection bins. This means ALL of the following items can be recycled…

  • Cereal box liners
  • Bread Bags
  • frozen food bags
  • Biscuit packets
  • Bubble Wrap
  • Confectionary Bags
  • Courier satchels
  • Rice and Pasta Bags
  • Cling Wrap
  • Toilet Paper Bags
  • Newspaper Wrap
  • Fresh Produce Bags
  • Netting Bags
  • Squeeze Pouches

“Over 200,000 plastic checkout bags are dumped in landfills every hour,” and “only % of Australia’s plastic bags are currently being recycled.”[1]

We need to drastically lift our game if we’re to going to make a real difference, but if we’re proactive, collect our plastic bags and return them to the store for recycling we CAN make a difference.

IN CONSTRUCTION & AT WORK

Businesses and construction companies now have a social and legal responsibility to dispose of plastic waste in the correct manner.

Where once demolition or office components were taken straight to landfill, we now see materials being sorted and separated into like substances and dropped off at transfer stations and recycling yards.

In New Delhi, “the government has made it mandatory for road developers to use waste plastic along with bituminous mixes to overcome the growing problem of disposal of plastic waste in India’s urban centres.”[2] Similar practices are being applied in Australia.

In Queensland, James Cook University teamed up with local business Fibercon “to develop a concrete product that is made from recycled plastic.” This product is “reducing the carbon footprint of construction at no additional cost.”

Its through innovations like these that we are seeing landfill levels slow, with aims to see levels reduce altogether.

UPCYCLE IN ACTION

As mentioned above, the REDcycle Program collects soft plastics from drop off points at supermarkets for recycling but do you have any idea of their reapplication?

These soft plastics are changing the construction industry. Not only are plastics being diverted from landfill but they are helping to reduce greenhouse emissions and save energy and water consumption.

Here are some products made from partial or fully recycled plastic and their benefits:

PRODUCT PRO
Green Pipe 100% Recycled Plastic
Composite Decking Termite Resistant, Low Maintenance, Water & UV Resistant
Bollards, Fencing, Furniture Continually Recyclable, Non-Toxic, Washable, Handle Extreme Climates
Concrete Toughens Concrete in Place of Steel Mesh, Saves CO2 Emissions

Don’t Become a Litter Bug!

Illegally dumped rubbish is not pretty. No one likes to look at it, not only is it an eyesore but it brings down the aesthetics of a neighbourhood and always seems to sit where it is for months on end. Each year thousands of household items get left on roadways, in bushlands and around unused properties.

Most of the time you will see old computers, mattresses, green waste and broken household appliances, however, the number one item illegally dumped is old furniture. Most of the time old furnishings get left behind because people don’t have enough time to discard their furniture properly or simply can’t be bothered.

Not only is dumped decor horrible to look at but it is terrible for the environment. When it rains, waste blocks drainage areas and leaks contaminants into our waterways and bush areas, killing vegetation and affecting the health of water ecosystems. Much of the time harmful chemicals are dumped along with furniture and are just left to slowly kill local vegetation and pollute our waterways.

>The old furniture on the side of the road issue

Many times rubbish won’t be collected until the local council is notified. This means that furniture could be sitting out on the side of the road for months at a time. All rubbish that is collected gets sent to landfill, anything that could have been saved and recycled is lost. Overall the practice of illegal furniture dumping is affecting the environment through poisoning bushland and waterways while adding to the landfill.

It pays to remove your old decor responsibility, and that’s where we can help. The team at the Cheapest Load of Rubbish are passionate about doing our part to help the environment. We hate nothing more than to see old furniture thrown to the side of the ride, and we live in these neighbourhoods too!

>Let us do the heavy furniture lifting

Let us pick up your old furnishings. If you know what you want to throw out, that’s as much work as you need to do. We will load all of your old rubbish onto our trucks for you, no need for you to do any heavy lifting. After we have all of your junk on our truck, we return to the Cheapest Load of Rubbish headquarters to hand sort through your old furniture pick up. We pass on all recyclable items to an accredited recycle waste station or to one of our various supported charities.

Your local council cleanup is an excellent way to get rid of any rubbish but many times you will find the council are limited in what they can collect. A lot of the time you may still find items left out the front of your house that you need to remove yourself. Cheapest Load of Rubbish can take any rubbish you need to be removed, not just house furnishings.

Better still, we can quote your old furniture pick up and collect your junk all at the same time! We don’t want to leave you with old furniture lying around your house or backyard that could wind up illegally dumped. Our service is top quality, you won’t even know that we have been, we leave your house clean and tidy after we have loaded all of your junk onto our truck.

>Clean out regularly & prosper

It pays to do a proper clean out twice a year to make sure you don’t have any old furniture lying around that you don’t need anymore. If you’re not using furnishings, you should ask yourself if you need it. Could someone else benefit from this piece? Either way, Cheapest Load of Rubbish can help you recycle any pieces of decor you no longer need.

>Tips to Avoid Illegal Dumping:

  • Always dispose of rubbish responsibly.
  • Check when your local council is having a clean up.
  • Call the Cheapest Load of Rubbish to take away any items you can not remove through the council.
  • Recycle old furniture wherever possible.
  • Carefully consider the adverse effects on the environment

Environmentally Friendly High Rise Living

According to a recent statement from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Sydney is set to become the first Aussie city to reach five million people. With this surge of new residents, we’ve had no choice but to go up.

Apartment living is fast becoming the norm, with the City of Sydney council stating that “75% of residences within City of Sydney are apartments – more than 5 times the national average”.

Restricted space and time constraints help to contribute to the 48 megatonnes of waste generated by Australians each year. However, with some small changes to our routine and a few minutes of effort, we can help reduce this figure and redirect rubbish destined for landfill.

How can we help?

By choosing Cheapest Load of Rubbish as your preferred rubbish removalist, you know that you’re doing your bit to reduce landfill levels.

We choose to support resource recovery stations that recycle household, building and renovation rubbish and are committed to “zero waste”.

Currently it is estimated that we recycle up to 80% of waste collected. This is made possible by sorting every load of rubbish collected. We endeavour to increase this total as new and improved waste management tools become available to us.

Your Wellbeing

A small living space doesn’t have to mean cramped living conditions. By living smart and cutting out clutter, your home space will feel inviting and invigorating.

Every day our team works in and amongst restricted site access. Our experience has enabled us to develop fast and effective ways of removing rubbish; so leave the stress of cleaning up your high rise dwelling to the professionals!
