The term has come to an end and the school holidays are finally here! While many will be dreaming about the ways they will be spending their time off, there are others who will be planning for the new term ahead. School Holidays are the perfect time to get down and dirty tidying up the school ready for another term of learning.
A messy classroom can really interfere with children’s ability to learn so taking the time to clean up will be beneficial for everyone. Our team have put their heads together and come up with 5 items/areas that you may not have thought about cleaning or disposing of.
1. Old School Books
With so many things going on in a term it can be easy to forget about old school books that have been left lying around. Exercise books, textbooks and drawing books can all clog up a classroom, interfering with children’s ability to learn and create.
While you may still need to keep some of these books, such as textbooks, for example, others you will be able to get rid of. Take the time to have a look around for books left over from previous years that are no longer wanted. You will probably be surprised at what you find!
2. Chalk Boards
These days the humble chalkboard is being slowly replaced by tech savvy smart whiteboards. If your school has been in the process of swapping over then you will most likely have old chalkboards lying around.
Leaving these old boards to sit around is not only a trip hazard to children and staff but it takes away from the look of the school. You are always wanting your school to leave a good impression on parents and new school children.
3. Old Sports Equipment
Most schools will have a sports shed, gym or hall where they store all of their sports equipment. Over the years this equipment will wear and tear, no longer good for use. You will really be surprised to see how much broken and worn out equipment gets put back into storage never to see the light of day again.
Take the time to go through everything and throw away anything that is no good. Think about deflated balls, broken cricket stumps, torn gymnastics mats and ripped goal netting.
4. Don’t Forget The Music Room
Often overlooked is the music room. This room is a music hoarders delight! Full of old instruments, sheet music and music stands. However, a lot of the instruments, music and music stands have probably seen better days. Music stands especially are easily broken and once broken can no longer be used. Why hang on to these? Instead, throw them away and make room for more equipment that the kids will be able to use and enjoy.
5. Furniture
School holidays are the perfect time to go around all rooms, including staff rooms and remove any old furniture. This includes broken chairs, tables, computers, school desks, filing cabinets, drawers, bookshelves.
Old or broken furniture will really bring down the look of your school and clog up space that could be used for newer equipment.
