Recycling in Sydney: What Can Be Recycled and Where To Take It

**Please note, Cheapest Load of Rubbish are a private company specialising in residential, commercial and construction rubbish removal. Please contact your local council for council clean-ups in your area.**

Manufacturers are far more mindful about using recyclable packaging these days, so you might be surprised to find out just how many of the packets and products you purchase can easily be recycled. That doesn’t mean it can all go in your council-provided recycling bin, though. Some things are a bit more specialised than that. E-waste is recyclable, but you can’t just toss it in the recycler. With that in mind, we’ve created a handy recycling guide to help Sydney residents recycle more!

What Can Be Recycled and Where To Take It

The first port of call for recycling is your council-provided recycling bin, so we’ll clarify precisely what you can place in it for regular council uplifts.

Suitable for Recycling Bin

A standard recycling bin can be used for paper, cardboard, glass bottles, tin cans, steel cans, aluminium cans, aerosol cans, plastic bottles, tubs, cups, milk cartons, and juice cartons. You should always rinse food and drink cans and bottles before placing them in your recycling bin.

Of course, just because it’s suitable for your council-provided recycling bin doesn’t mean it will be sufficient. So, if you have excess that simply won’t fit in your regular recycler, you need to either find out where you can take it yourself or invest in a rubbish removal service to lend a hand.

Not Suitable for Recycling Bin

You can’t put everything in the recycling bin. Plastic bags and soft plastics are not allowed, and neither is broken glass, crockery or waxed cardboard. You can’t use it for medical waste, hazardous materials, foam meat trays, shoes, clothing, nappies, ceramics, bubble wrap, or polystyrene. While some of these items may be recyclable, the process is different for these than it is for the items in the recycling bin. It’s too difficult to sort through once it reaches the recycling point. For the most part, these items are for general household waste.

Op Shops

If you have clothing, old furniture that still has life in it, or books and toys, many op shops are happy to accept donations provided all items are in excellent condition.

As for items that might not be in such great condition, consider using online groups. You never know what skills people have to breathe new life into old or broken furniture. Many crafters and hobbyists love to cut old clothes into scraps to create patchwork items. Be sure you’re open and honest about the condition of your items. You also might be surprised by how inventive people are to breathe new life into certain bits and pieces. One person’s junk truly is another’s treasure, and it saves you the hassle of clearing out.

Recycling Events

The City of Sydney makes it easy to find out where to dispose of your household items. If you’re ever in doubt, you can use the finder service for recycling help. Alternatively, you can take advantage of the recycling pop-up that opens for several hours every Tuesday. There are also Recycle It Saturday events if you can’t attend mid-week pop-ups.

If you want to take advantage of a pop-up, the Tuesday events accept clothing, linen, toys, aluminium coffee pods, batteries, empty blister packs, electronics, paint, x-rays, scans, printer cartridges, light bulbs, polystyrene, household gas cylinders, and small metal items. You can dispose of large cardboard at the Saturday recycling events.

Designated Recycling Points

E-waste is one of the most common types of waste people store in a drawer or tuck in a closet. There are dedicated e-waste disposal sites, and they’re free to use.

Improper disposal of paint tins is harmful to the environment, and you can dispose of these safely at a recycling pop-up or one of the many disposal sites around Sydney. You can also drop old batteries off at a Tuesday pop-up, but if you can’t make it to one of these, there are safe disposal sites in shops around the city. If your scrap metal is too large for the Tuesday event, you can find a recycling plant in the city; there are many dedicated to scrap metals and they accept any size or type.

The finder service should help ensure you get your items to the right place.
