There’s nothing more exciting than a move, but all change is stressful, even the happiest changes. If you don’t have a plan to organise your move, it will be more stressful than exciting. We have compiled some tips and hints to help you prepare for a move, including the most efficient rubbish removal strategies.
Efficient Rubbish Removal Strategies
The first stage of rubbish removal is decluttering. The last thing you want is to pack absolutely everything in your house and take your clutter with you. Moving is a fresh start, so be ruthless!
It’s always helpful to create a timeline to help you stay on schedule – that means setting goals for clearing and packing each room, having a plan for efficient sorting, and using whatever resources are available to you.
Ideally, the process should start at least a month before you move. You don’t want to leave it to the last minute.
Work room by room and sort through your belongings to determine what will be making the move to the new property and what won’t be. When you have a pile of items you definitely don’t want, you can sort them into a donate, sell or bin pile.
You can categorise your belongings into types or you can do it by room – whatever makes it easier when you reach the other end. A lot of people use colour coding and room categories for ultra organisation. For example, you might want to categorise everything together for the living room… but, to make unpacking easier you may want to break it down into electronics, photos, accessories, etc.
Start with the most cluttered area and if you’re dealing with a partner’s space or your children’s belongings, involve them in the process to ensure you don’t dispose of something sentimental. Typically, the most cluttered areas at home are kitchens and storage ideas. If you have duplicates – you only need one!
If you have furniture items you aren’t going to keep and they’re storing clutter – you might want to start there so you can arrange to get rid of the furniture earlier in the moving process. You don’t have to wait until moving day to resell or donate these.
As you work through the clutter in each room, you can start packing up the items you’re definitely keeping. It will make the entire process much easier when you start the full packing process.
If there are items in great condition that no longer serve their intended purpose, consider if you can use them elsewhere. For example, maybe your child has outgrown a piece of furniture, but could it be used to organise the shed or garage or even repainted and placed in the bathroom?
Donate or Resell
If you have items in good condition, you may be able to donate them and many op shops will collect the items so you don’t need to worry about dealing with bulky items. The first step is to check the op shop requirements and look at what items they’re accepting. It will save you a lot of phone calls if you find one shop that will accept everything.
Alternatively, you can resell or give away items that are in good condition or could be upcycled. Many people love a project and giving furniture a fresh life is a passion they’re willing to pay a small fee for. The benefit of this route isn’t just the cash in your pocket, you can require an uplift in the listing. So, someone is paying you to pick up the item you want to get rid of! You can also list items for free with uplift, you’d be surprised at how quickly people snap items up.
The Final Stage
Freeing yourself of the rubbish is the final stage (before the actual move).
Don’t wait until moving day to deal with this.
Don’t leave anything behind with the thought that it’s useful to someone else. Nobody wants your leftovers, even if it’s a nice piece of furniture. If it wasn’t in the terms of the sale, don’t leave it behind.
